Writing update Tuesday!

My story oscillates wildly from twisted family drama to queer teen romance and wow is that an interesting tone to balance. My admiration for my favorite authors grows and grows as I blunder my way through scenes and write in the notes things like “seems kind of dumb to introduce another character” and “check your timeline” and “I’ll figure it out.”

For all my outlining, I usually let my words get ahead of me. It’s often that I look up with a “huh, didn’t know that was where this scene was going.” You think I could pretend to have a semblance of control. Sometimes this one hand on the wheel strategy works fine, that’s how the initial idea for this story came to be. Sometimes I need to take a two-handed grip and U-turn before I really get us all in trouble.

It’s fun to figure this out … but I also wish it would figure itself out? Like damn, I’m showing up. Do I really need to think about how to puzzle piece some emotional healing after trauma bullshit together all the time? (Yes, yes I do).

Uff da.

Here’s my collection of last sentences from this past week:

  • 4/16: She’s one of the good ones.
  • 4/17: I hand the phone to Mason.
  • 4/18: I never did.
  • 4/19: Cat starts scratching on the door the moment I shut it but I don’t let him in.
  • 4/20: I don’t know if I will ever forgive him.
  • 4/21: “Well, then, by all means, keep throwing rocks, Romeo.”
  • 4/22: It’s not Mason.

With Love,

Natalie
