The key is to skip to the kissing parts. Or at least that’s what helped me get moving in my last writing session. And I actually had a couple of decent writing blocks this week where I worked on an early scene and then, yes, skipped ahead to write some tropey first kiss shit because it was fun and easier that figuring out other things (you know, like, plot?).
I’m feeling more motivated now to pump out some true trash draft writing and see where it takes me. If nothing else it feels good to flex those muscles again while I wait to hear back from a fresh batch of queries that went out for my last story. I’m not promising I’ll exit quarantine with a completed novel in hand — that still feels painfully far away — but I do want to start making visible progress rather than just toying around with characters in my head while I run.
Here are my last sentences written from this past week:
- 4/1: Not disappointment.
- 4/2: I reluctantly turn around.
- 4/2: I realize I’ve seen her look this way before.
- 4/3: Loudly.
- 4/4: Clarke Mallory always shows up like she did so on accident.
- 4/5: But instead I take a deep breath and kiss her again.
- 4/6: I think I’m still crying.
With Love,
Natalie
