I spent three hours reading (and finishing) Once & Future this morning by my apartment pool. The new young adult novel is a futuristic re-imagination of Arthurian legend. It’s set in space and Arthur is reincarnated as a girl, Ari. It’s also fantastically queer.
It’s a good book — more fun for the galactic setting and queerness than the punch of the writing — but worth reading.
Here’s the side effect, inevitable for me when even an allusion to King Arthur or Merlin is made: I had to watch some Merlin (the BBC show) and reread some fanfiction.
I know … Natalie you didn’t have to. But I really did.
Other people’s brains must work this way. You’re reminded of something you love through another something and your thoughts will not shut up until you get a dose of that fucking thing. So for me, watching a singular Merlin episode and rereading a quick 40K canon era fanfic is a good way to quell the real dangers (i.e. a full rewatch or deep dive into my 300+ Merlin specific Ao3 bookmarks … 2015 was quite a year).
It’s like when I read Good Omens a few months ago and all the angels and demons talk had me rewatching a few seasons of Supernatural. (side note: starting watching the Good Omens Amazon series this evening, very promising.)
I think I’ve shaken it off in one day and I can safely return to watching Naruto and reading the Heroes of Olympus series.
What a gift to have so many stories to love.
With Love
Natalie
