We explored a little bit of Parsons, Kansas today, and just behind our hotel are trails, a disc golf course, and two Stan Herd sculptures.
Stan Herd is a watercolorist and artist who’s also as known as the father of crop art. The two statues we saw today were “Ancient Man” and “Turtle Island”.
My mom is pictured below next to the “Turtle Island” sculpture — she loves turtles. Finding a turtle here for her in the middle of Kansas was surreal!
The inscription on sign read:
Turtle Island, according to some indigenous groups, is the name of North America. Lenape and Iroquois oral histories tell of the creation of land when the earth was covered with water. Dirt placed on the back of the “Great Turtle” grew into the North American continent.
