There is so much to explore in Door County that was never on my radar growing up. We always cycled through the same spots and restaurants in our limited time, but now that this is my home I’m continually appreciative of how beautiful it is.

I went hiking with my parents again today and they showed me two spots they discovered this past year in the Bailey’s Harbor area. After a brunch at Heirloom (godly food, Austin-vibe, pimento cheddar biscuits), we hiked the Toft Point trail. The trail runs along a peninsula along Lake Michigan’s coast, right along Moonlight Bay.

My dad is the tour guide, pointing out the huge red pines — old growth. Door County used to be covered with gorgeous old trees but loggers have cut them down in the past centuries. Now there are only a few pockets around the county. They are no redwoods, but there’s just something impressive and awe-inspiring about a really old tree.

We even saw two different eagles’ nests along the route.

After, we went to a trail from the Door County Land Trust that seems to be unmapped and unadvertised: Walt’s Woods. It’s a short loop, but there are some pretty good rock overhangs with tree roots growing into the stone.

It’s not quite warm enough for me yet, but the sun was out and it turned out to be a great day. Fresh air, good food, good walks, and then followed by a couple of hours writing on parent’s deck. Just what I needed.

With Love,
Natalie
