I sent some resources out to my company’s people managers this morning. There’s no getting around that for the majority of us this is really tough week. The anxiety and fear and uncertainty have been constant leading up to the election and we know in all probablility it will not come to a halt on election night. If you’re like me your bracing yourself and trying not let the beating hope in your chest turn into the worst kind of jinx.
Here’s some of what I sent out to my managers for them to help support employees this week:
- Acknowledge the stress. I hear that you are worried about _____ (e.g., the election, getting sick, civic unrest). That makes total sense.”
- Express gratitude towards employees – a little extra this week could make a difference
- Remember everyone is going through a different experience this week, recognize that everyone may not be performing at 100% and that’s okay. Encourage breaks and prioritize mental health.
- [I pointed them to mental health resources we have in our benefits plan]
- Soothing Ted Talks
- Take care of yourself too!
If you’re not a manager, certainly you can apply this to anyone in your life this week. Don’t pretend what’s happening isn’t happening. Show gratitude and appreciation. Take time for self-care but remember to prioritize the self-care of others around you too.
