I’ve waited years before
A whole college of them
Waiting for a finish line
That turned into flames as I crossed
The burns scarred
All that waiting and wanting
For what

This is not the same
Says the intellectual brain
But my body remembers
So it tenses during this countdown
The wanting —
then the blow
There’s no bracing for it

Still – the crib arrived today
He’ll sleep beneath the waves
I painted myself
And when I close my eyes
I hear it between my breaths
This is worth the wait
Just wait

With Love,

Natalie
