I’ve been intentionally building my resistance to running in cold weather this past fall. I’ve been inconsistent with running for a while but for the last couple of months I’ve built up a good routine again. I knew that routine had to happen before the inevitably long winter set in. Who starts a running routine in January when the roads are icy and it’s 10 degrees outside? New Year’s resolutions just aren’t strong enough to break that barrier.
I’ve tried to craft that routine ahead of time. We had a cold spell in early autumn and I made myself bundle up and get moving, reminding myself that those ‘feels like 25 degrees days’ would drop another 20 degrees in a couple of months so there was no reason for me not to go running. It’s served me well so far — anything above freezing has felt practically like summer with that mindset.
The last couple of days the roads have been snow-covered and icy in many sections — forcing me to focus on my form and pick up my feet so I don’t slip. It’s definitely not the time to lean into speed, but it does feel great to run through the chilly air and enjoy the outdoors even in the winter season. We’ll see if I can keep it up in the months ahead.
With Love,
Natalie
