I was browsing the library stacks this morning by happenstance . . . my mom was printing things off at the Kress and I unhelpfully wandered to go look at books. Not that I need more books on my to-be-read pile. I really, really don’t. But I still walked out with three.
All of them are from a juvenile book series I’ve never heard of before: The Magic Thief by Sarah Prineas. A fun, easy magical adventure series is something I’ve been craving on and off lately . . . and I’m waiting a little bit longer to reread the Percy Jackson books.
So far it seems I picked right because I read the first book cover-to-cover this afternoon. It turns out a four hundred-page book only takes a few hours when it’s at a third or fourth-grade reading level. But it was exactly the tone I was looking for — a voicey, resourceful protagonist who is a gutter-thief turned wizard’s apprentice. The excellent thing about kids books is that they are fast-paced and adventure-packed, it’s easy to keep turning pages.
Now, this reading session certainly ruined other plans I had today . . . D&D prep, running, anything that involved not being on the couch. But clearly, my body and mind were craving a rest day. And a rest day with a book just feels better to me rather than watching TV . . . though I obviously have no qualms about binge-watching shows.
I’m also feeling a lot of library appreciation. That I can browse the stacks on a whim and find entertainment for the afternoon, completely for free, is a gift.
With Love,
Natalie
