The Alamo Drafthouse sent me a summary of my 2019 movies, claiming I’d been to the theater 56 times in 2019. Which really isn’t true and would be over a movie a week. Maybe they were counting refunded tickets? Or times I bought tickets for others? But it had me curious enough that I went and counted in my purchase history and I did go 31 times in 2019.

At the Alamo last year I watched:

  • On The Basis of Sex
  • The Kid Who Would Be King
  • How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (x2)
  • Captain Marvel (x2)
  • Shazam
  • Friends With Benefits
  • Aladdin
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (x4 . . . plus one more time at a non-Alamo theater)
  • Booksmart
  • The Dead Don’t Die
  • Toy Story 4
  • The Lion King
  • The Goonies
  • Hustlers
  • Abominable
  • The Addams Family
  • Zombieland: Double Tap
  • JoJo Rabbit
  • Last Christmas
  • Charlie’s Angels
  • Frozen II (x2 . . . plus one more at a non-Alamo theater)
  • Knives Out
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • Little Women
  • Spies in Disguise

In early summer they came out with their season pass (~$21/mo for unlimited movie tickets) so I at least go two or three times a month now . . . or basically what I did before but a little more economical.

It’s probably evident what my favorite releases are from the number of times I watched them, but for the sake of documentation here’s my top 5 from that list:

  • Spider-Man: Far From Home
  • Frozen II
  • How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
  • Captain Marvel
  • JoJo Rabbit

I’m off to a pretty slow start in 2020 with only one movie at the Alamo so far (Like a Boss, meh), but I did see an incredible film last night called Weathering With You. It’s a Japanese animated film done by the same creator of Your Name (another amazing movie), but I had to go to a Regal cinema to see it since it wasn’t in any of the Drafthouse theaters. The premise: a runaway boy befriends an orphan girl who can control the weather in a near-future Tokoya plagued by constant rain. There’s a lot of love and found family along with mounting stakes and violent situations that is my perfect mix in movie-watching.

There’s a lot more movie-watching to look forward to in 2020 (Mulan, anyone?).

With Love,
Natalie
