I finished the short Netflix series Smiley today, a Spanish queer romantic comedy. It starts with a voicemail to a wrong number that connects an intellectual architect (Bruno) with a hunky bartender (Álex). It’s the opposites-attract trope and the I-don’t-like-you-but-can’t-stop-thinking-about-you-trope.
The show is full of other interesting relationships that I quickly became invested in and the 8 episodes (all between 30-40 minutes) quickly pulled me through the story.
The raw emotionality of the show was great. I was definitely in tears during a few scenes in the latter part of the series. But the show ultimately had such hopeful and happy resolutions all around (true to the romance genre) while still being grounded in reality.
You can watch the trailer on Netflix here.
If you’re in the mood for some queer romance, I recommend checking it out.
With Love,
Natalie
