I am always surprised when I find a movie I like, new to me but that’s been around for years. Tonight, it was Saint Ralph. A 2004 Canadian release that apparently is one of my mom’s favorite movies and I have never heard of before.

The premise: 14-year old Ralph (with zero prior running experience) decides to try to win the 1954 Boston Marathon, producing a miracle that will wake his dying mother from a coma.

Set in an all-boys Catholic school, this movie was funny and inspiring and often irreverent and played Hallelujah at just the right moment. Plus, it’s about running. That’s basically 30% of the media I consume . . . how did I know about this one?

It came up in the first place when I was talking out loud about the book I am working on (about a girls’ cross country team). “Working on” is very generous phrasing. If a book was a marathon I’d be somewhere in mile one. Maybe still doing strides in the warm-up zone.

Anyways. If you’re like me and completely missed this movie, do yourself a favor and watch it.

With Love,

Natalie
