For my dad, on his birthday

My dad taught me to write poems that rhyme
So now I think of him every time
And mark occasions with a verse
Though mine come off a little worse

My dad stocked me up with good advice
That I call on to navigate my life
About running and health and saving money
And the only constant is change, life is funny

My dad is rarely every still
If there’s a will there’s a way and he has the will
But in my early years, we’d watch TV
All that Star Trek made a nerd out of me

My dad read aloud in front of the fireplace
Until the worlds of magic became commonplace
And though his job makes him roam
He treasures most when he is home

My dad is many things to me
A pilot, a good man, a space nerd,
A history buff, a hard worker, a smart worker,
A guy who calls his mother every day
And shows me the right thing
By leading the way

If only every daughter would
Have a chance to be loved this good

With Love,

Natalie
