Red goes with everything
Though I learned the hard way
That it’s better to paint on your lips
Than to smear on your wrists
But that was before the word
‘crimson’ made me cringe
I’m still growing up

You’re so skinny
You’re so skinny
The woman repeats over and over
Both times I see her yesterday
What are you doing
What are you doing
That’s what I wanted to hear
So why do I hate it so much?

Today I’m ravenous
Shovel pizza and breadsticks
And chips into my belly
Anticipate an evening of empanadas
And more chips
God, I’m hungry
There’s a quote going around
On my Instagram
‘If you start talking about your diet I’m going to scream’

That’s not what this is
I close my eyes and pretend
That if I never say the word
It can’t be true

I dance, dance, dance
Nearly every day
I tell myself I love you
And I believed it
Three sizes up
And I believe it now
That’s what this is

I put on red lipstick to wake up
To meet friends
For empanadas and a show in the park
On a hot August night
My belly aches a little from the chips
But I will eat when I’m hungry
And laugh when I’m happy
Can you hear me?

With Love,

Natalie
