On our final day at Mammoth Cave National Park, we hiked six miles along the Railroad Hike & Bike trail. We’d planned to go do some backcountry hiking again, but the ferry across the Green River was unexpectedly closed so we switched it up. I think it was probably for the better — after clocking nine miles or so yesterday — my legs were tired and the Railroad trail was relatively flat, but still traversed through the lush Kentucky woods.

Along the way, we stopped by an old cemetery, saw two snakes, and made a plan to get slushes at Sonic afterward to cool off in the humidity. Showered and sugared, this afternoon we’ve taken it easy to recharge. I went out on our cabin’s porch to read and nodded off for a bit. I am of the age where I nod off in the afternoon now.

Tomorrow I’ll head home, but despite only three full days here, the experience has felt full and joyful. Hiking, cave tours, pizza runs, campfires, s’mores, card games, good nights of sleep. Sometimes you just need to disappear into the woods.

With Love,

Natalie
