I want to hire people who pick up trash in the office even if no one’s watching. I want to work with people who do their dishes. I want to keep working with the people who volunteered to take turns laundering kitchen towels so we have less waste.
I want to be the kind of person who does those things. Who keeps on straightening the pillows on the couch and clearing common space clutter without anyone ever asking me too.
I love the people I work with who never say “that’s not my job” even if it’s not their job because they see the big picture, they want to solve problems, and they understand that sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and make sure a ball doesn’t get dropped . . . in your job description or not. I don’t want to work with people who just stick to the job description.
I love the people I work with who are tasked to be strategic, who are strategic, but who can still get tactical, who still do the work, who never say work is beneath them. I don’t want to work with people who think any work is beneath them. Like those people who leave their trash in movie theaters for the staff to pick up instead of carrying it out themselves. I don’t even want to know those people.
I want to hire, work with, keep knowing the kind of people who pick up office trash. Who take pride in their space. Who don’t just notice something and say that’s not my problem.
I don’t want to be the kind of person who says that’s not my problem.
With Love,
Natalie
