The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization of women and men (and nonbinary folks, though they should update their mission to reflect that) that encourages informed and active participation in government. It has a long history, starting in Chicago back in 1920 out of the suffragist movement.

My mom is on the board for the Door County chapter, founded in 1954, and they do some really excellent work in the community — from educating people on how to vote and removing barriers, encouraging democratic participation, and striving to influence public policy through study and advocacy.

One thing I like about them is that although they are nonpartisan, they are not neutral. They take a stand on issues that are important to the membership.

I went to a social event they had tonight alongside my mom — an informal drinks and dinner in Sturgeon Bay for members to get to know each other. They are really trying to engage with younger generations and carry the work forward . . . so they were excited I was there.

I don’t know what my involvement will look like yet — I put my name down to learn more about the DEI committee — but I know it’s a good organization to keep a pulse on as I stay involved in the Door County community.

With Love,

Natalie
