The family went to the Kanaloa Octopus Farm today, a conservation and research facility where you can play with day octopuses. Which sounds fun. And technically is fun. But the octopus is also the spider of the ocean so it’s also a smidge terrifying.

Those tentacles are sticky. And every instinct is to yank your arm back out of the water and that octopus wants to go with you. You’re supposed to just pull their tentacles back to get them off of you if you want, but then there are more tentacles. One female, Cheshire, definitely tried to gently devour Mom — but like in a friendly way? As the staff reminded us, these are not Kraken. Still, after a couple of tentacle encounters, I tried to play with the floaty toys instead. It is very cute to give an octopus a unicorn rubber duck to play with.

In conclusion, octopuses are awesome and smart and unless I’ve built up some kind of long-term quirky friendly with one I never need to touch one again.

A worthwhile excursion.

With Love,

Natalie
