I haven’t been running much this summer, so I haven’t had many opportunities to do what I did today. A hot afternoon run. Ending on the dock, as always. And then I strip the shoes and electronics and get in the bay.

I swear, there are few blissful sensations that match the feeling of cool fresh water immersing my overheated and sweat-drenched self. I float on my back in the waves and dunk my head under. This year, the water level is still low enough that I can stand easily on the rocks below.

Those few minutes of swimming are more motivating to run again than nearly everything else. It’s the kind of post-exercise reward that nourishes my soul as well as my body.

In sixth months, when the lake is frozen again, this is one of the things I’ll look back on and long for. And yet it took me until the end of July. How quickly we forget.

With Love,

Natalie
