A quiet Fourth this year. Removed from the parades and the fireworks. Next year, maybe. But today, I am content being in the sun, playing cribbage, and walking around the point.

There are memories of strawberry pie and hotdogs and catching a beanie baby from a parade float. Of kettle chips and rep lipstick and listening to Martina McBride’s “Independence Day”. Up here, in Door County, there is a flood of people and celebrations that are not for me, not this year. Not that the Fourth was ever on my top list of holidays. Without getting into a critique or protest of America (which is warranted), it has never been a holiday that I hang my hat on. Though there were celebrations, there were no consistent traditions in my childhood around the Fourth of July.

So instead I sort through Marvel stickers that I’m using for a work activity next week and start rewatching My Hero Academia again because it’s excellent and gives me motivation. Plus Ultra. I listen to my D&D podcast and go for an evening walk and imagine I am moving forwards. Maybe I am. “Talk about your revolution . . .”

With Love,

Natalie
