I’ve been housesitting for my parents for the last couple of days. Not because they asked me to, but because they have great internet and a hot tub and I know the garage code.
That makes it sound like I was breaking and entering, but to be clear I have been very transparent. I brought in their mail. Even trade, right?
Besides the obvious extra amenities (did I mention how wildly better their internet is?), it’s nice to shake up the routine. Today especially, when I found myself meeting free after 2 pm (three-plus no meeting hours, what a luxury) I could work in the sunroom or on the deck and think surrounded by nature and space. It’s amazing how much I can get done when I have a little uninterrupted time.
I love my condo and my workspace — it’s a comfortable and familiar routine — but moving around gives me a new perspective. Like when I ended up angry after a meeting today and was able to go outside on their deck during lunch, meditate, and reset to the sound of birdsong.
The past two evenings I’ve sat in the hot tub by myself and looked up at the tree cover while listening to podcasts. It’s calming, peaceful. My commute home is a five-minute bike ride. I am very lucky. May we all have parents a mile down the road who let us unabashedly take over their house.
With Love,
Natalie
