For me, Thanksgiving is a day of family. It’s been my family’s main holiday for the past few years — ever since I started coming home for Thanksgiving instead of Christmas after some weather travel nightmares. My mom cooks — and my mom is universally acknowledged as the best cook — so the food is wonderful and a production with everything made from scratch and all of us doing a dance in the small cottage kitchen. I spent a lot of time stirring and mixing and buttering lefse since I have little talent or confidence for “real” cooking.
But as we all know, it’s not really about the food. It’s about being with my family and close friends and I talk so much about gratitude and blessings already, but I am so happy for this: the Euchre (card game) with my grandpa and uncle, the homemade pies that have us catatonic in the sun room, the after meal walk down Mariner Road after we’ve bundled in our winter gear. It’s a lot of commotion and relaxing all at once and it feels like home.
So that’s my list today, nice and simple: I’m grateful for this day. My family, being home, the food, the hugs, the cats, the wine, the early morning run, and the late night hot tub soak (coming up after this writing).
Happy Thanksgiving!
