One week left in Texas, and all I want to do is eat. There are lots of things I’ve missed about Wisconsin food — the availability of mac and cheese pizza, for one — but there is no denying that Austin has universally fucking good food.

So as I don’t really want to restock my groceries anyway, I’ve basically resorted to an (arguably very unhealthy) farewell tour through my favorite Austin restaurants. Lots of tacos and burritos. Tomorrow I’m thinking Pinthouse pizza. I just had some fried chicken.

My body is going to demand a reset after this, I feel it already, but this is the end of an era. No more Torchy’s Tacos with the good chips and queso? Better eat it every other day.

No more Thundercloud Subs??? (Okay, that seems to be pretty unique to my tastes – it’s just a sub shop – but I love it and have eaten multiple times a week for years).

Southern comfort food has been such a beautiful gift in my life. I had never had chicken and waffles before moving to the South. Or cheese grits? This is where I learned to love Barbeque. It’ll probably be years before I go to Salt Lick again, so I’m thankful I went at the end of February, just weeks before quarantine.

In the absence of a proper victory lap (you know, there a pandemic), takeout and delivery is my consolation prize. By default of the small town I’m moving to, I won’t have as many options and, in theory, will save money (and reboot my nutrition?) on the other side of this…

For now, let’s eat.

With Love,
Natalie
