James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, has a quote: “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”

I sit with that again. The gravity of choice, of identity. Who we are is defined by how we show up, what we do, the decisions we make. Do I believe that? I question even as I write. There is so much internal life that barely breaches the surface. But I do believe, when the day is done, we are how we acted.

Were we kind? Were we brave? Were we good friends? Did we act in alignment with our values? How we show up matters, not just how we wish we’d shown up.

It’s why identity is a more powerful motivator than almost anything else when it comes to goals and habits. Think “I want to be a published author” versus “I am a writer.” That identity can guide decisions. What would a writer do at this moment? They would write. It’s not about a finish line, it’s about building a life.

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”

I sit with that.
