We do an exercise at my work where we ask people about their dreams and long-term goals. We used to call it the Motivational Interview.

Here’s the prompt: Imagine it’s three years from now. What has to happen for you to say that the [X] dimension of your life is awesome?”

We typically go through four dimensions: Career, Financial, and then two you can choose that often revolve around Relationships and Lifestyle.

I first did this interview in 2015 and I’ve since taken myself through the exercise multiple times to update it. I’ve found it to be really clarifying on what’s important to me and how I can make it happen.

I was working on some training related to it this evening, so I thought I’d copy down the prompts here in case you find it useful as well:

What has to happen for you to say that the Career dimension of your life is awesome?

  • Then, how do you envision it happening? What steps do you think you need to take?
  • Why is this important to you?
  • How would you feel if you achieved it?

What has to happen for you to say that the Financial dimension of your life is awesome?

  • Then, how do you envision it happening? What steps do you think you need to take?
  • Why is this important to you?
  • How would you feel if you achieved it?

What has to happen for you to say that the Relationships dimension of your life is awesome?

  • Then, how do you envision it happening? What steps do you think you need to take?
  • Why is this important to you?
  • How would you feel if you achieved it?

What has to happen for you to say that the Lifestyle dimension of your life is awesome?

  • Then, how do you envision it happening? What steps do you think you need to take?
  • Why is this important to you?
  • How would you feel if you achieved it?
