Revisiting the Shire and Middle Earth this weekend. Tonight, Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition of course). These movies continue to hold up . . . and make me cry. With every watching I appreciate new facets of it more. Tonight it struck me that the smoke ring Bilbo blew followed by Gandalf’s smoke-shaped ship sailing through it (before Bilbo’s birthday party) was foreshadowing for the final scene in the trilogy. I don’t know if I’ve ever realized that before.

But of course it’s the classics that stick. Like this quote. It’s one of the most quoted in the series I’m sure and brings me to tears every time.

Frodo: “I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.”
Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

Or of course, Sam, being the true hero again:

Frodo : Go back, Sam. I’m going to Mordor alone.

Sam : Of course you are. And I’m coming with you.

Tomorrow, the rest of the trilogy, more quotable moments, and definitely more tears. May we all have as good of weekends as to immerse ourselves in Lord of the Rings.

With Love,
Natalie
