Northern Door Pride put on their third annual cabaret this evening, an event that funds their scholarship program for local high school students. The even outgrew their last venue due to popularity, so tonight was a sold out show at Northern Sky’s Gould Theater featuring members of the community performing a line up of Broadway songs that all had something to do with school.
“Dancing Through Life” from Wicked, “I Wish I Could Go Back to College” from Avenue Q, “Just Breathe” from Prom: The Musical were all on the line up as well as “Sante Fe” from Newsies, “Seventeen” from Heathers, and “Apex Predator” from Mean Girls . . . a lot more. And of course there were two songs from Dear Evan Hanson: “Waving Through a Window” and the show closed with “You Will Be Found”. I don’t think I can hear either of those songs without choking up a little.
Winter is interesting in Door County. There’s no one on the roads but then all of sudden the entire county shows up for events like these. And there’s a beautiful community spirit to this type of show: local performers telling their stories in-between songs, a local nonprofit (one of three LGBTQ focused ones in the county), a community coming together to celebrate a night of music, joy, and acceptance.
I also now have a dozen different musical songs stuck in my head.
With Love,
Natalie
