We talk about canoeing on Midwest rivers
Or kayaking or sailing on the lake
We talk about camping
I’ll make the fire
She’ll cook the food
They’ll set up the tent
We’ll drive to the closest national park
Or meet at the state parks that dot the way
Cabins, campsites, backwoods
All the things we want
Suddenly so close

We will never spend a year
Or nine months
Or six
Not seeing each other
Not again
Not if I can help it

We talk about the boy with the bread
And the girl on fire
And how they both wanted nothing to do with war
But wanted to bake and garden
And draw and walk through the woods
And how that is a good, good life

It will be a good, good life

With Love,
Natalie
